Just about ran the battery out yesterday, barely made it home

Our son (age 17) drove our car down to 0 recently. He was 2 miles from home and he just kept driving until he was home. So we know there's at least 2 mi of reserve. Personally I think that's where the other 3 kWh are - at the bottom as a reserve. Ford doesn't tell you it's there on purpose. No...

    Car Charging Etiquette! :D

I don't think this problem will be as bad as everybody thinks. EVs will have increasingly larger batteries and range, alleviating the need to plug in so often.

    Car Charging Etiquette! :D

I agree with WattsUp's response to this. The problem is not Tesla's proprietary connectors. The problem is the bad designs that keep coming from the SAE and then adopted as standard. SAE J1772 is hopelessly inadequate and Tesla had no choice but to develop their own design. Try pulling 255 amps...

    Car Charging Etiquette! :D

I have mixed feelings about this. Ignoring the fact that the Tesla chargers won't charge a Leaf or FFE, Tesla is paying rent to the mall to reserve those spaces and also pays a fee for the electricity which is generally higher than residential rates due to demand charges. On the other hand, most...

Ford to install chargers for employees

Nothing like waiting until the last minute to get the tax credit. Without that they probably wouldn't be doing it. Glad they're doing it though.

    Car Charging Etiquette! :D

It should go to the highest bidder obviously, with the proceeds going to those who lost. Good way to make money if you stop bidding early. With the Tesla there, you could bid it up pretty high without winning. I'm joking of course, but it would actually work pretty well. The person with...

    25a chargers? Cheaply?

I'm surprised ClipperCreek doesn't make an LCS 40 (charging up to 32A) or LCS 50 (up to 40A). This last one would work great on the ubiquitous NEMA 14-50 outlets/circuits and be a little more future-thinking than 20A.

What are you using for a charging station?

@WattsUp what did you do about this? We recently ran into the same problem. A month ago our charging cable fit just fine. Now it's so tight that we stopped using it. Here's what I learned: I've always built my own charging solutions. The one that I built for the FFE I used a good quality...

    Should we keep these plates?

Good replies! How about asking for GAS LOL :D

    Should we keep these plates?

We just got our license plates: GAS 332 My wife wants to return them to the DMV because, well, you don't put plates with GAS on an EV! My teenage son, OTOH, thinks it's so ironic and funny that we should keep them. I'm not sure what to think. So... I'm wondering what all of you FFE drivers...

Anyone add an LED to a Level2 J1772 plug?

I've done this. One of my minor gripes about the FFE is that it doesn't illuminate the charge port very well so you end up fumbling in the dark. (end of rant.) @unplugged is correct that you don't get any power to the handle until it's already plugged in and the FFE signals that it's ready to...

    Battery gauge inaccuracy

Actually if you tell it your route then it can see into the future but that's not what I was asking of it. What I'm asking is for the car to give me the option of calculating how many miles it thinks are remaining as if I was going to drive like the EPA does. I have not found a way to get the...

    Battery gauge inaccuracy

He's not exaggerating much. If you're used to a Tesla drive train you know how well an intelligent battery gauge works. Where I live there is no such thing as consistent driving on flat ground. Does that exist anywhere? Even if most of your trip is the same speed on a highway, you still have to...

    Battery gauge inaccuracy

FWIW I've noticed the same behavior with our gauge. Not sure why they do it but I concluded a while ago that the gauge and range calculations on this car are for the birds. Or butterflies. :)

Check out my mobile Level 2 charging kit!

jstack6 all good points. I'm surprised none of those other models you mentioned have settings to limit amps and/or charge level. It's a popular feature with Tesla owners - almost hard to get along without it!

    Charging rate display?

Doesn't work for me. I rarely get in or out of a car without something in one of my hands. Your two handed approach requires setting something down. The charge port door is a bad design IMHO. The best EV should take you 2-3 seconds to plug in and unplug using only one hand.

    Charging rate display?

OK, thanks for your help. I'm using a DIY EVSE so I will probably add a function to measure the amps. It would be handy at public charging stations though.

    Charging rate display?

Is there anywhere that displays the rate of charging? And the volts? Surely it must be in a menu somewhere but I can't find it. Also is there a way to enable a warning if you try to drive off with the charge port door open? I often see my wife heading off to work that way...

+1. ClipperCreek makes the best charging equipment and that's a really good price.

    Any NH or VT drivers?

I drive a Roadster but I've also driven a Model S in snow. The Roadster is great as long as the snow is not so deep that you have clearance problems (There's only 5" under the car). It's better than any front wheel drive car I've ever owned but not quite as good as my awd Subaru Legacy. The...
