After 6 months my Focus EV is doing great, simply an incredible vehicle for the price.

But my mileage is bumping up there, 10K for the 6 months, so on-target to breach the baseline warranty within a couple of years.

I've started to look at the extended warranty options (there's a couple of dealers sell them at big discounts).

I know most people here lease, but are there any owners out there with the extended warranty plans (or those who specifically chose to not get the plans) and can I get your thoughts/experiences.

Have you looked at Ford's program? If you haven't, maybe take a trip back to your dealer. I liked the program a lot. Then again, we don't put many miles on any car - so it was an excellent deal.

With a lease, 3 years, bumper to bumper warranty, you don't care about extended warranties.

Frankly: Why would you want an extended warranty on an EV? What is going to break?
The only real concern would be the electronics - dash, infotainment, and power accessories. I would hope that the price of the extended warranty would reflect this.

Engines are the only reason for the extended warranty. Electronics more than anything.

There are expensive things in this car that can go wrong. Not saying an extended warranty is a good or bad idea - I've just seen some very expensive parts.

I just had to replace ONE front parking sensor on my ICE Focus - guess how much? $700. The problem wasn't an accident, it was something that would have been covered by an extended warranty. Don't even begin to talk about the price of the computer pieces. Happen to know the price for a headlight assembly? $3,000. Granted, that part would probably only break in an accident - but what if the seals go bad and the headlight needs replacing.

There are incredibly expensive parts in that car that could cost a lot of money to replace.

True, but look a the bigger picture.

Say you have three cars over a 10 year period. Each car had an extended warranty, which you purchased, that cost "only" $500. Two cars were fine, but one car had an issue that cost $1000 to get it fixed... but it was fixed "for free" under the extended warranty. Unfortunately, over the 10 year period, you actually overspent by $500. It would have been cheaper just to replace the part for $1000 out-of-pocket, and you would have been $500 richer in the end.

So, good idea or just "expensive insurance"? There are valid points to be made on either side. But, most insurance (including extended warranties) are priced they way they are because most people never need it.

I went for the whole hog extended warranty. 6yrs. it covers the car for the length of my payments.
Will it be worth the $1800.00? Dunno. We bought a used land rover and extended the warranty which has paid off in spades.
The mistake there was we left a $200.00 deductible on it. This sux especially if you have a small claim.
On the other hand, I bought the extended warranty on the excursion and it never paid for itself. :( Again, the deductible sux.
I put $0.0 deductible on the FFE so that if I ever have to use it, then it won't hurt one bit. The difference in cost was only a couple of bucks a month. Another interesting point is that the labor is covered as well.
If I never have to use it, then no big deal. The car is over priced anyways and no point in paying more than we have too if something major fails. If I weren't so determined to be able to thumb my nose at the gas stations as I drive by, I wouldn't be buying the car until the price difference between the ICE and the FFE come a whole lot closer. But that's another issue altogether.

Long and short is that your damned if you do and damned if you don't but if something major does fail, and your covered, then you win. ;) Ahhhmm.... that is to say, "your covered" :) But if your not, then you pay the the sum of the extended warranty and the difference between it and the cost of the parts and labor. And again if it happens again. :(

Just bought my FFE- dealer offered 3 yr extended warranty for $1490- the list of cover items (1000+) which I glanced at was ICE parts. Prior 20 yrs electronic field service (ship navigation) taught me that most equipment failures are electro-mechanical or put another way moving parts- so I am not that concerned about the computer failing. One other perspective is that the ext warranty is like betting against the casino- the odds are in their favor otherwise they would be out of business. Unlike the government...

Extended warranty high profit item for dealer ships to sell the customers. Only buy extended warranty that is by the cars manufacture! The dealership I bought my extended warranty from sold it to me at dealer cost. This was a great deal because it saved me over 30% off the price.
I got the 6 year 60,000 mile warranty.

I liked the Ford warranty - it was a good deal. They have a good mileage / cost sliding scale.

We leased this car, so the 3 year bumper to bumper covered everything. No need for the warranty.

Great discussions guys.

One additional feature of the extended warranty ... Free Replacement car during repairs.

But based upon this discussion I've decided not to get the warranty.
