BMW Assist Using 2G & 3G Service No Longer Supported

I just got a notification in the mail from BMW (I used to own a 2008 550i, apparently BMW still thinks I own it!!) that after 2016 they will no longer be able to provide BMW Assist services that rely on 2G & 3G service. They are claiming that "after 2016, the underlying technology is no longer being supported." I seem to remember that our cars utilize the same technology. Has anybody heard that the same thing will happen to us at the end of this year?

Yes, I had read this thread, so was aware that the issue likely existed in our car. However, the BMW communication was the first time I'd seen an absolute date on the service ending, and was wondering whether Ford's service would also be ending at the end of the year.
