I leased my FFE in Sept 2012. It now has 11K miles on it. It started to make an odd sound so I took it to the Ford dealer. They diagnosed it as a bad transmission. A new transmission has been ordered. Car has been in shop for 1 week and we are still waiting for the new trans. I love the car but this is a little scary to have a major component fail after only 11K miles. Anyone else experience this?

Can you describe the odd sound? Any other symptoms? Did you feel more drag or lash when you sped up or slowed down?

All I hear from mine is a high-pitched gear whine under acceleration or braking, like a jet engine without the thrust sound. I also notice, after 7000 miles, there seems to be some drivetrain lash... the car is so quiet that I can hear a very soft "thunk" when I get on and off the gas while maneuvering into a parking space. Audibly, there seems to play in the drivetrain now, but I can't "feel" it.

To be fair, I've noticed increased drivetrain lash in every new car I've bought, but only after tens of thousands of miles, and the ICE masks the sounds so that I don't notice the increased play until it can actually be felt; no audible "thunk" until many years and miles down the line.

My car is only a month old with 2, 500 miles and last week I stopped kinda fast, when the car stopped I felt a big thunk. It felt like the transmission falling into place or something like that. That's the only time that's ever happened.

In the FFE there are two brake systems, electric and mechanical. In normal driving they work seamlessly. During a hard brake they are both engaged at the same time. When the car is nearly stopped the electric regenerative braking system switches out. It could be the clunk you heard was during this transition.

Now with my car I can hear no discernible gear noise under normal driving conditions. The car has close to 7000 miles on it.
With the car in park I tried rocking it back and forth. I can only get it to rock back and forth about an inch and a half. I could hear the gears in the transmission when they hit their end of travel. Now this is only checking part of the drive train. When driving at walking speeds the car makes no noise. But when driven at higher speeds what you mostly hear is tire noise.

If you are concerned about any noise test drive the dealers demo car to compare against. First drive your car then drive the dealerships car over the same roads.

I, too, have noticed a "soft thunk", when driving normally, say, 35 or 40 (maybe others as well). It happens when I go from slight or no acceleration to coasting and back.

I was going to bring this up on the forum, to see if it merits leaving it off at the dealer

I usually hear it just as a come to a very gentle stop at a light. I've always noticed this, right from when the car was new (with 87 miles on it).

I think it is normal and just a function of the motor being directly connected to the gearbox (as opposed to going through any kind of clutch). As the car comes to a stop and gears stop turning, there will be a little bit of a "tick tock".

WattsUp, thanks for that :D . I really didn't want to leave it at the dealer's for an extended period.

The sound was rhythmic and seemed to be timed with the rotation of the tires. Kind of a soosh . . . . soosh . . . . soosh . . . It was not loud and I could only hear it at walking speeds in parking lots. Had to have the driver's window down to hear it. I think it just made the sound in forward gear. I was very surprised when Ford diagnosed it as a bad trans. I did not feel anything unusual when driving, just an odd noise.

Its been 2 weeks now and the dealer still does not have the new trans to install.

We got our 2012 Focus electric in Nov and loved it for the most part. BUT, driving home in March, my wife experienced a loud pop and the car was obviously disabled. We had it towed to the dealer and a bearing in the transmission blew. 10 days later we had a new transmission, but now it makes a "Rhythmic thumping sound" with acceleration and braking, similar to a failing CV joint sount. We had it back to the dealer for a week, and they could not figure it out, and thought it was coming from the transmission. I expect another failure in the future. The car is a lease and has made me wary of buying another Ford. Any suggestions???

Update on my trans problem: 4 weeks now and the dealer still has the car. They ordered a new trans, it finally arrived, but Big Ford told them to do some diagnostic work to try and figure out what caused the failure. Apparently Ford has not seen this problem before in an FFE. Doesn't surprise me with so few of them on the road. Supposed to have the car back next week. Frustrating, but I guess this is what to expect on the "bleeding edge". It's not fun having to buy gas for the rent-a-car they provided me.

I too have noticed a little driveline 'lash' or play now shifting from R to D or vice versa. This was not evident when the car was new (now have 2000 miles) it isn't excessive and I assumed this is a natural course of components breaking in. Will report back if anything changes....

Yep mine too, I got just over 1,800 on it now. I can feel and hear it at low speeds. I also sense it at higher speeds when lifting all the way off the throttle and then accelerating. I also notice when I pulled in the garage tonight I was definatly hearing a clunk when shifting from park to drive, drive to park, park to reverse, reverse to park and from drive to reverse and reverse to drive.

It's almost like the clunk from my old 1984 Blazer had with bad U-Joints.

Well when it breaks I will post it.

Got my car back after about 6 weeks with a re-built transmission. They found "damaged input gear and final drive gear, bearing exploded". The service advisor said it was a needle bearing. I asked how much the repair would have cost had it not been under warranty. He estimated about $2500. Rather sobering.

New to this Forum. I have had my 2015 FFE for almost 4 months, let me reword that, I had my 2015 FFE for 3 months and the dealer service department has had it for almost a month. Long post, but guaranteed interesting read!

As I was preparing to pull into a parking lot, the car started to shudder similar to the way it feels when the ABS kicks in under hard braking, except I was driving slow but not breaking. As I entered the lot everything was fine and I was doing around 5 MPH about 100 yards into the lot. Suddenly it appeared as if the brakes locked up and it came to a screeching stop. The car left skidmarks approximately 18" long. The car would not move and the tires would not roll, ignition still on but nothing could make the car move. Tried turning it off and on, nothing! Turned it off and sat for 5 minutes and tried again, still nothing. Called Ford roadside assistance for a tow and sat back while I backed up traffic in the lot. After waiting an hour and 20 minutes, the tow truck arrived. When I told him the tires would not roll, he asked me to get in the car and he rocked it back and forth several times and we heard a loud snap and the car could suddenly move under it's own power. He loaded it onto his flatbed and we were off to the dealer. This happened on June 17th.

We got to the dealer and unloaded the car. I had previously showed them that the headliner was separating from the hatch area and they ordered a new one. They would install this then try to figure what was wrong with the locking up. About a week later, with a new headliner installed, they said they think it may be in the "gearbox" (they claimed that Ford does not call it a transmission) and that they would have a Ford FFE specialist check it out. Another week went by and I called back to have them say that they were still trying to figure things out. I decided to call the dealership GM and left a message. The next day a gentleman who announced himself as the service manager, called me. I told him of the problem and wondered why it was taking so long. He said they had been driving it and got it to lock up as well but were waiting on the Ford FFE specialist to tell them what to do. I mentioned to him that Ford has this wonderful app called "myFORDmobile" and that I can actually track where the car is on a map and it tells me the charge status and the number of miles driven. I also added that for the almost 3 weeks it had been in for service, that it had not recorded a mile having been driven, in fact because it is fairly accurate, I was able to see that it had been pretty much been sitting on their lot in the same place for most of the 3 weeks. He promised to find out the progress and keep me posted (and he has been calling me with regular updates since.)

on July 1st he left a message that they were going to take the FFE on a little 30 mile trip to see if it was still acting up. I called him back the next day and he said that they again had experienced the lock up and were just waiting for Ford. I mentioned that "...I guess you didn't get a chance to take it on that little trip..." his initial response was "...yes the technician took it out yesterday!" He paused and then said, "OH, you've got that app, don't you?" I answered "yes I do." Then he asked if it indicated that they did in fact take the trip and I replied "not according to the app." He said he would call me right back and he did, explaining that it was not necessary because it was locking up regularly now.

I waited till Monday the 6th and got in touch with Ford directly and opened a case number. The representative on the phone showed that the dealer had been in touch with them on the issue, but it did not start until after my call to the dealer GM. On Wednesday the 8th, I was informed that indeed there had been a catastrophic failure in the gearbox and pieces of metal were contaminating it. They ordered a new drive moter and gearbox and would try to get it done as soon as possible. They are thinking it may be done next week, about a month after this all happened.

BTW I had only put 1600 miles on the FFE when this all happened. Will let you all know what happens next week.

This started happening to me a few months back. BE CAREFUL and go to shop ASAP!

I did not worry at the time BUT after a few weeks it became so bad, shifting itself!

Anyhow if you look in engine compartment you will probably see the engine torqing over slightly and pulling on cable of the shifter!

It is a LOOSE BOLT on the engine mount and eventually the BOLT will sheer off as it happened to me and you will have lots of damage like the CV joint being totally destroyed.

Been in the shop (actually the parking lot at the dealer) for almost two months (less than a year old car) and getting really upset!
Of course they started accusing me of abusing the car and having fallen into a ditch but now have decided to fix it.

I am convinced that the engine bolts are experience greater torque than as of a similar ICE Focus and that
is a problem.
