My heater wasn't working recently. I think it was just that the coolant level was low. I had the coolant drained and refilled, since it was time to do that anyway.  Then, when it still wasn't working, I seem to remember that they bled some air out of the lines. That still didn't do it, but the heater magically started working a few days later. I guess some remaining bubbles of air worked their way out out of the lines by themselves.
