Sleep Mode

I live in Canada but have been in California for a week- Just went on the iPhone app to check things out and says the
car is in sleep mode and I have to physically access the car with the key. Does this happen normally after a week of no use?

Yes

the point is to save the 12v battery: everything completely shuts down until you grab the door handle.
