    Camping with the Focus Electric

Jesla will allow you to use the 14-50 outlet and charge at the full 30 amps; as well as a ton of other outlets. http://shop.quickchargepower.com/JESLA-is-THE-40-amp-J1772-portable-charging-solution-JESLA.htm

Installing a Bosch EL-51253 Power Max 30A Level 2 charger:

No, 3/4" you're fine. Your current setup would be: 2 8AWG 1 10AWG Ground 2 12AWG Your possible future setup would be: 2 6AWG (Could do 3 also if you wanted to do something like a NEMA 14-50R) 1 10AWG Ground 2 12AWG Both of these setups are fine with 3/4". I always suggest going 12 AWG and...

Installing a Bosch EL-51253 Power Max 30A Level 2 charger:

Looks like you've thought it out pretty well. One thing I would suggest would be to run 3/4" conduit so that you can run 6 AWG in the future. (I would run the 6 AWG now, but that's up to you.) That way, if you get an EV in the future that pulls 40A, it's a simple EVSE and breaker swap. If you...

National Drive Electric Day at Huntington Beach, CA

Awesome! I'm driving the other FFE

    Range/Capacity Test

I ran the SOC correction service function and my estimated capacity is back up to 18.8 kWh. This still isn't the full 19.4 kWh I got yesterday, but a lot closer than the 18.2 kWh estimate I got when I charged to full. Interestingly, I arrived at work with 2% greater SOC than normal today. This...

    Range/Capacity Test

In my test today, I ended up seeing 0.4 kWh beyond stop safely now. At that point, the ready to drive icon went away, and the HVAC compressor and PTC heater quit.

    Range/Capacity Test

Michael, I'm getting similar results with the ETE. I'm not sure why, but the definitive test is to fully charge and completely discharge via the HVAC. This is a constant load, and there is no regen charging loss to mess with the estimated net energy consumed. There is a SOC correction service...

    Range/Capacity Test

Yesterday, I took the wife on a range test up a US highway until the range remaining equaled the trip traveled. I learned some interesting things in my 2012 FFE. The day was partly cloudy, about 80F. The trip was started on 100% SOC, tire pressure checked, and of course, climate control off. My...

    Generator for Emergencies

I'm in the process of installing a Generac 22kW NG air cooled generator on an automatic transfer switch right now for the house and FFE backup charging.

    20 kW Fast Charging Future

Carl, You are correct. Chademo is DC charging and does not require any on board charger on the vehicle. My point was that the J1772 standard allows for up to 20 kW of draw (80A). A 20 kW J1772 station, for instance the Clippercreek CS-100, is much less expensive and much more reliable than the...

    20 kW Fast Charging Future

With all the new releases of 25 kW and 20 kW Chademo stations, I've been thinking that the manufacturers should just give their vehicles 20 kW worth of on board chargers, just like the Tesla Model S. This would be a great move to making public fast charging a reality. With 20 kW of on board...

My FFE in a car show

Just take some pliers and pull up on the center part. It takes some effort, but that part will pop up and then the whole fastener (the outer ring part) will come right up.

My FFE in a car show

I suggest taking the foam cover off that says "Electric". People are much more interested when you actually show them the parts. Like the main battery conductors, high voltage distribution box, DC-DC converter, PTC heater, motor, inverter, and coolant distribution.

    Fast Charging

The FFE is regen limited at 60 kW. Meaning, it can charge via regenerative braking up to 60 kW. Now, this doesn't mean a sustained charge would be warranted that high, but a 30 minute 80% charge would certainly be in the realm of possibility. Ford just wasn't interested in giving the car that...

Stop Safely Now (SSN) Post recall

If you have reason to believe you can make it happen again, or it will happen again within a week or so, request the dealer set you up with a CFR (customer flight recorder). This is a device that is plugged into the diagnostics port that will record a bunch of parameters, including DTC codes...

    240v on 30amp dryer outlet

Is this dryer circuit in use by your dryer already, or are you using gas for your dryer? If the dryer is using the circuit, I wouldn't do this unless it's your last option. It will work fine if you only run one at a time, but if you have to plug and unplug every time it is going to get old...

    120v Charging Outdoors

Good tip. I always have navigation muted. I just use it for range/surplus tracking.

    120v Charging Outdoors

Also consider, that with these calculations you should be able to make it even on the worst days. If you just use the navigation to calculate your distance to the next charging station (your home when coming back from work) you can keep an eye on your surplus. If things seems like they are not...

Some of my other Electric rides

Update: I did end up going corded. I got the Kobalt 21 inch 13 amp corded mower. The thing works great. I had to get used to trailing a cord, but it seems easy enough. Just mow away from the outlet. I ended up getting 200 feet of 12 AWG extension cord. Now onto the snowblower conversion...

    Best plug-in outdoor charging station

I built my own. So I bought the UMC from the Tesla store online. I was first concerned that I wouldn't get one, but completely unprompted by me, they shipped the adapter to my address. Just requested the faulty one be sent back with a prepaid label.
