Anybody know how many cells in the battery pack?

I've read the Volt battery pack has 96 cells in series, with a nominal battery Voltage of around 360, which I think is pretty much the same as Ford's.

Anyone seen a teardown of the Ford battery pack or otherwise know if it's also 96 or some other number?

Both the Volt and the FFE use LG batteries. I doubt that the number of cells is the same because the Volt battery is 288 prismatic cells with a size of 16 kWh ( http://gm-volt.com/full-specifications/ ). The FFE size is 23 kWh.

Ford Focus Electric gets its power from seven lithium-ion battery packs, each with 14 cells. Or a grand total of 98 cells. I think the battery pack voltage is 325 volts.

Excellent, that's what I needed to know...98 cells. Now if I can measure the battery voltage, I can know voltage per cell

Interesting, but that information seems to be about a prototype vehicle (see the comment near the illustration, and the illustration itself, which doesn't look exactly like a production FFE).

One comment mentions that the battery packs are "air-cooled" (which we know is not true of the production vehicle). Other comments also mention coolant pumps and the battery (though without specifically confirming that the batteries are water-cooled).

So, seems the information about this prototype may be somewhat inaccurate relative to the final production FFE. That said, the cell count is probably accurate, both based on this "confirming" information from Ford, and other information gleaned from folks here in the forum.

As WattsUp says, this info may only apply to a prototype. In some earlier threads, a Ford service manager states that there are 88 cells of about 4.1V each, for a total pack voltage of ~360V:

I know this is an ancient thread. Just updating it with accurate information. From the testing done by Idaho National Laboratory on a 2013 FFE; 430 Cells arranged in 86 series groups of 5 parallel cells (86S5P). Cell voltage 3.0V min. 4.2V max. Nominal system voltage 318.2V Rated at 75Ah (23kWh). Pack weight 667 lbs. Oddly they list the chemistry as LMO. I'm pretty sure the chemistry was NMC but now I can't find a reference for that.

As far as the 33.5 kWh pack in the 2017+ I can only speculate. I would guess the cell count etc is all the same just probably switched to a higher energy density cell. I am guessing this because it has been reported that the earlier pack has been replaced under warranty with the 33.5 kWh packs as practically a drop in replacement with only a computer update to recognize it has a higher capacity pack.

On a side note, I was chatting with the tech at the dealership that is holding my car hostage, and he said that his software in his scan equipment lets him view the actual voltage of each cell of the battery. I thought that was pretty interesting.

I think that can be done yourself with ForScan too.

With the app for the phone? Or the one for the computer. I have not tried the laptop version yet but Ive heard it does more than the phone app does.
